User Profile

This version of Wanda Maximoff was created to mesh with the X-men movieverse, especially their portrayal of Magneto and her absence from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. As such, Wanda is older, more stable, and possessed of less raw power.

When Erik's wife, Magda, fled from him after the death of their daughter, she was pregnant with twins. She fled to Wundagore Mountain, under which the deity Cthon sleeps, and was given shelter by the cow-headed Bova, who became the children's nursemaid. Wanda was affected by the Cthonic energies permeating the mountain, and developed a talent for chaos magic.

Bova persuaded the Maximoffs, a family of Roma, to take the twins in. Wanda spent her first ten years happily, in spite of crushing poverty and bigotry against her people. But when her adoptive father was forced to steal to survive, an angry mob burned down their caravan, trapping her parents within and burning them alive. Pietro escaped with the unconscious Wanda.

The fortress at Wundagore Mountain was home to the Knights of Wundagore, "relatives" of Bova's. The Knights took Pietro in, but refused to do the same for Wanda as they believed she had been "tainted" by their enemy, Cthon. They placed her in the care of Agatha Harkness in New York City, where her apprenticeship as a Witch began. Since that time, she has spoken with her brother only through regular letters.

As she grew to womanhood, Wanda became more and more obsessed with controlling her abilities--especially their tendency to cause minor to major disasters when she was upset or threatened. Magical training helped a great deal with this, but she didn't consider it enough. Meditation, therapy, medication...she tried as many avenues as she could find, even choosing her college major accordingly. At 28, she earned her doctorate in mathematics, with a specialty in Chaos Theory. She now acts as a stock-market consultant, and has written a few books.

The whole time that Wanda has been building this very calculatedly normal (if isolated) life for herself, however, her anger, bitterness, loneliness and anarchic tendencies have been flaring up in some truly weird ways. A child-molesting priest was transferred into her local parish and died after being hit by a falling piano. A homeless family of six hit the state lottery. The local clinic has incredible luck with patient outcomes. Local criminals have started having the shittiest luck ever. An idea--vigilanteism--has been growing in her head the past few years, and incidents such as Spider-Man's antics in New York and the X-Men's increasingly public efforts have only galvanized it.

She's starting to walk the streets nights, and quietly intervene when she sees trouble. She's subtle...for the most part. Hasn't done the whole "costume" thing yet, and doesn't let herself be noticed. But rumors are starting in New York about a witch in a scarlet scarf....

Powers

Mutant ability: Wanda has control over probability, in the form of "hexes" which achieve her intent through random occurrences. She has to be very careful about her emotions and specific intentions when using her powers, as the less specific and controlled she is, the more chance of damaging side-effects. Her focus on chaos theory and her magical training have helped her get better control of her powers; she tries to use them to follow the "path of least resistance" according to her calculations, instead of simply forcing large changes in reality. When sufficiently angered, however...

Magic: Wanda practices Chaos Magic, which is primarily used to focus her mutant power. However, if her power is ever disabled she will still be able to cast (lesser) spells.
